History is the systematic study of the past, primarily concentrating on the human past. As an academic discipline, it analyses and interprets evidence in order to construct accounts of what happened and to explain why it happened. Some theorists classify history among the social sciences, while others consider it part of the humanities or as a hybrid discipline. Similar debates also exist regarding the purpose of history—for example, whether its main aim is theoretical, in that it seeks to uncover the truth, or practical, in that it seeks to draw lessons from the past. In a more general sense, the term „history“ extends not only to an academic field of study but also to the past itself, to past events, or to individual texts relating to the past.
